Autism in the Classroom: Meeting Unique Learning Needs

Every child is unique, and so are their learning needs.
Children differ in their strengths, communication abilities, interests, experiences, developmental profiles, and the level of support they require. While some children may learn effectively through verbal explanations, others may benefit from visual supports, demonstrations, hands-on activities, repetition, or structured guidance. Respecting unique learning needs means recognizing that learning is not a one-size-fits-all process. Instead of expecting every child to adapt to the same teaching approach, educators can adapt the learning environment to support each child's participation and success.
Moving Beyond a One-Size-Fits-All Approach
A traditional approach often assumes that all learners should receive the same instruction, complete the same tasks, and demonstrate their understanding in the same way. However, learners may experience barriers when teaching methods do not consider their individual needs.

Instead of asking, "Why can't this child learn the same way as others?" we can ask, "What support does this child need to access learning successfully?"
Universal Approaches to Supporting Diverse Learners
1. Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework that focuses on designing learning experiences that are accessible to all learners from the beginning. Rather than creating one lesson and modifying it later for individual learners, UDL encourages educators to proactively provide multiple ways for learners to engage, access information, and demonstrate their knowledge (CAST, 2024).
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is built around three key principles that aim to create flexible and accessible learning experiences for all learners. The first principle, Multiple Means of Engagement, focuses on the “why” of learning by providing choices, meaningful activities, and opportunities to connect learning with individual interests to support motivation and active participation. The second principle, Multiple Means of Representation, focuses on the “what” of learning by presenting information in different formats, such as spoken instructions, visuals, demonstrations, videos, or written examples, allowing learners to access and understand information in ways that best support their needs. The third principle, Multiple Means of Action and Expression, focuses on the “how” of learning by providing learners with different ways to demonstrate their understanding and communicate their knowledge, such as through speech, writing, visuals, technology, or other alternative methods (CAST, 2024).

2. Differentiated Instruction
Differentiated Instruction focuses on adjusting teaching based on learners' readiness, interests, and learning needs. Instead of expecting all learners to complete tasks in the same way, educators can modify the level of support, materials, pace, or response requirements while maintaining meaningful learning goals (Tomlinson, 2014).
Examples include:
Providing additional prompts or scaffolding when learning new skills.
Adjusting task complexity based on the learner's current abilities.
Offering extension opportunities for learners who are ready for more advanced challenges.
Using different teaching strategies to help learners achieve the same objective.
3. Individualized Instruction and Evidence-Based Practice

In applied behavior analysis (ABA), individualized programming involves assessing a learner's current skills, identifying meaningful goals, selecting evidence-based teaching strategies, and continuously monitoring progress to ensure interventions are effective (Kapp et al., 2013).
Creating Learning Environments Where Everyone Can Succeed
Respecting unique learning needs does not mean lowering expectations. Instead, it means providing appropriate supports so that every learner has the opportunity to participate, develop skills, and experience success. When educators, therapists, and families embrace flexible teaching approaches, they create environments where differences are understood, strengths are recognized, and every learner is given the opportunity to grow.
